Arggg! I don't understand why so many of the Gospelchops videos freeze up on me, although the sound is still fine.

I'm gonna make 2 points here.

1. I love this guys playing, and he has an absolute wealth of chops, and very tastily employed. Although sometimes his fills switched the time around when he didn't( by mistake I guess) keep it in 4/4, but whatever, he's a great player.

2. Maybe this point isn't that important but worth making. For me personally, none of these gospel players that I'm seeing from that site are really breaking new ground. They all seem to be doing the same thing, in the same style, with the same stick twirling, the same grooves, and variations on basically the same fast rolls around the kit etc. Could any of us really tell the difference between them like we can tell the difference between vinnie, weckl, erskine, chambers, harvey mason, sean rickman? Those examples of players all have a distinctive style and more importantly, their own sound. I would imagine that for every 100 gospel players that can all chop and groove like these guys we're seeing, maybe one or two will actually develop a unique identity. And those will be the ones that become the players whose names we remember since they will be recognised for their musicality more than the fancy chops. Just my thoughts.

I'm with ya Rudy...great chops, but more of the same...

I don't get it...they play all that chop stuff when playing with the choir, too...

It's also what most of the drummers at Guitar Center's drum-off sounded like....

I'm not all that original either so maybe I'll just shut up...

I find it kind of neat of they all sound the same, have the same type of feel, and very similar licks and solo styles. I mean, is there like some master cd or video that all these kids watch and learn from?

rudy, i agree with you. vinnie was doing those same licks back in the early 80's but with more dynamics and more creative phrasing. besides from his unnatural sense of time, those two things really made him stick out from the rest. all these gospel drummers do sound the same. they phrase the same, play on the same dynamic level, tune their drums the same and interpret the pluse the same (feel).
